The beautiful Ashlee of ~Ill-wovenElm expressed interest in having a portrait painted of her, and I found myself with photos of her and a sketch needing a reference. I plan to add better backgrounds and more surreal qualities to my portrats from now on!

The way you paint hair, and the way you paint branches is a lot alike...at least in this image. I like the repetition on that point. And the great sense of foreboding, as those tangled branches crawl up her arm. This definitely looks like denial. Also, there is something striking in the way you do faces. Possibly the eyes? Or the super color? I'm not sure. But this is an interesting piece of work! :)

Wow, that is quite a portrait... It's so much more striking than the sort of usual, neutral portrait... Not an image I'm likely to forget. ;) It really has a life all its own.

Thanks alot! I'm really jazzed you think so, because I was thinking to myself: what's the point of painting someone's portrait realistically if it'll never look as good as a photo? Why not just have fun and do stylistic things you can't do with a camera instead?

Well... what can I say, it's astonishing! The lighting is almost like a cepear and the generally toned down colours work really well. Literally saturated with meaning I bet. Stunning!
